Studies on the Bar Series of Drosophila V. the Effects of Reduced Atmospheric Pressure and Oxygen on Facet Number in Bar-Eyed Drosophila.

چکیده
HE investigations which have been directed toward a clarification T of the kinetics of facet determination in the Bar series of alleles in Drosophila have, heretofore, been concerned largely with the use of temperature as a suitable and easiIy controlled variable. The manner in which temperature data have been used is clearly set forth in the work of a number of investigators, notably, KRAFKA, 1920; ZELENY, 1923; DRIVER, 1926; 1931; LUCE, 1931; HERSH, 1934; and MARGOLIS, 1935 a and b. The present paper is the outgrowth of an effort on the part of the author to find other environmental agencies which might be brought to bear upon the problem. The data presented here deal with the effects of reduced atmospheric pressure, and of a pure oxygen atmosphere on the number of facets in the compound eye.

A Change in the Bar Gene of Drosophila Involving Further Decrease in Facet Number and Increase in Dominance
As part of a study of the factors controUingeye facet number in Drosophila melanogaster, selection has been carried on with a view to the determination of the germinal changes appearing during the course of selection. One of the most interesting of these changes occurred during the second generation of downward selection in the white bar stock. An exceptionally "low" male of this generation was...
متن کاملEnvironmental Factors Other than Temperature Affecting Facet Number in the Bar-eyed Mutant of Drosophila
In a recent paper the author 1 has undertaken to show the relation between temperature and 'the facet number in the bar-eyed mutant of Drosophila mdanogaster Meig. Since it was essential to know the part played by other environmental factors the experimental evaluation of some of these was carried out. While these experiments were not as critical as was desired, they give some idea as to the re...

Introduction: Pain research using animal models is related to ethical concerns, so invertebrates and insects have been recommended by researchers. In the present study, the nociceptive and antinociceptive effects of capsaicin, aspirin, morphine and chili extract were examined using fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) as an alternative for rodent pain model. Methods: Stage 3 of larvae and ad...
متن کاملThe Effect of Temperature upon Facet Number in the Bar-eyed Mutant of Drosophila
Three strains of the bar-eyed mutant of Drosophila melanogaster Meig have been reared at constant temperatures over a range of 15-31 degrees C. The mean facet number in the bar-eyed mutant varies inversely with the temperature at which the larvae develop. The temperature coefficient (Q(10)) is of the same order as that for chemical reactions. The facet-temperature relations may be plotted as an...
